Men's Osteoporosis (From An Article in a Japanese Management Magazine).™Juveriente's Blog

Osteoporosis” is the pronoun for bone-aging in general. However, most men don’t seem to think about it as seriously since they believe that it’s “a disease particular for women”. But why do they think it’s not that serious? - Because the medical exam for osteoporosis is mostly provided for women between 40 to 70 years old. Actually, men in that age, also, face bone problems in which the amount of bone matter decrease. In fact, one-fourth of osteoporosis patients are men. Then why is the men’s ratio lower? Because younger men simply have more bone matter than women by a 20 to 30 percent ratio. That means men tend to be delayed in onset. Especially after men turn 65 years old, the risk gets even higher. Therefore, it’s very important not to decrease the density of bone after men turn 40 years old. Most of the time, men tend to care about muscle or body fat rather than bone condition, but bear in mind that muscle or body fat are controllable if they try, no matter how old they get. This doesn’t apply to bones though

I’ve seen so many cases when it’s too late for bones to be recovered, and it even causes a change in shape as the density of bone is lowered. Men tend to overlook this, believing it’s perfectly okay since such changes can never be shown in their appearances. What’s more? Unfortunately, they finally realize the fact when their bones break by casual acts in their daily lives.

Interestingly, in that case, the bone breaks as if it is a soft taco being smashed, instead of snapping off. This is called “fragility fracture”. Unlike the element of regular bone fracture such as falling down swiftly or coming off from high places, this occurs in daily life by a very low impulsion; when you sit down on the couch, hold your grandchild, cleaning or gardening.

What’s worse, once you get Osteoporosis, it’s very hard for bones to recover or to get their normal shape under the condition where the density of bone is low. Unfortunately, we can hardly expect a positive recovery by surgery, taking medicine, proper diet and training in coordination with current medical technology.

That being said, the amount of activity decreases in the long period of time due to long treatments, which also lead to degeneration of bone and muscle strength. Even worse, if you break the body part which is used for walking, such as your femur, there is a high possibility of ending up bedridden.

Therefore, from this moment, I want you to positively keep having down-to-earth-bone-care!

One of the characteristics of bones is that they are in your body because they are necessary; of course if they are unnecessary then they will not be there. “Necessary” here means that bone is given moderate impulsion. In other words, to maintain strong bones, you need to give the bones stronger impulsion than what you usually give in your daily life. For instance, if you usually take a walk, it would be more effective to try jogging once in a while besides walking. Why don’t you start first by moving your body as positively as possible?

Here’s another thing which is very important: Intake abundant nutrition to make good bones. The first thing that might come to mind would be calcium butactually, protein is the major part of the bone. The protein, which you intake from meat, fish, milk and egg, is absorbed into the body and turns into amino acid. Using the amino acid, osteoblast cells (cells that make bone) produce collagen which is the basis of bone. Then the collagen absorbs abundant calcium from the blood and then firm bones finally are formed. Also, vitamin K is necessary to make osteoblast cells and vitamin D, to absorb calcium. Forming good bones is never achieved only by calcium but by a great combination of exercises and various nutrients.
